About Jerry

Jerry began his racing Career at age five, driving quarter midgets with his father Jerry Coons Sr. In the late 80's, Coons began racing midget cars at the age of 14 in 1986 at El Paso Speedway Park. At El Paso Jerry got his first Midget win of his career. In 1987 he finished 2nd in Arizona USAC midget Points with one win at Pima County Fairgrounds track and four second place finishes. at the age of 20 Jerry would win his first championship by winning the Midget division at El Paso Speedway Park with 475 points in 9 races. In 1996 he caught the attention of the midget world when he won the pre-lim night at the Belleville Midget Nationals over Billy Boat in Rusty Kunz's Car. He won the Pre-Lim night in 1998. That same year Jerry took the leap and moved from Arizona to Indianapolis and teamed up with CED Motorsports to begin racing on a regular basis. He also would go on and compete for the first time in the USAC Silver Crown Series. In 1999 Coons took another step forward by getting his first USAC National Sprint car win in the CED Motorsports 7c car at the Preliminary night for the Terre Haute National Open at the famed Terre Haute Action Track. He ran part-time in the National Series until he teamed up with Hoffman Racing in 2005, winning at Manzanita Speedway and finishing 7th in Points. In 2006 and 2007 Jerry won the USAC National Midget Championships. In 2008 he Became One of only 6 drivers in the history of USAC to win the USAC Triple Crown by adding the 2008 USAC Silver Crown and National Sprint car championships to his resume. In 2010 he was named National Midget driver of the Decade starting 282 features and winning an amazing 56 times. Basically 1 out of every 5 races Jerry was standing in victory lane. Also during the decade he won National Midget Driver of the year in 2007 and would repeat that feat in 2012. He would win his only Belleville Midget National in 2012. Coons also has wins in all three USAC Series classes at the all important and prestigious Eldora Speedway's Four Crown Nationals, winning in Silver Crown in 2007 and 2014, Sprint Cars in 2009 and in a Midget in 2010. He is a two-time winner winner of the Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Speedway in 2011 and 2012, as well as a two-time winner of the Hulman Classic at Terre Haute Action Track in 2010 and 2013. Between 1994-2020 Coons has appeared in 19 Chili Bowl A Mains, with a best finish of 4th on three occasions 2009, 2010 and 2016. He also runs the Little 500 and in 2014 posted his best finish with a 2nd place finish. As of 2020 he's still competing in all three USAC Series on part-time basis...
