A memorable night this past Friday at the Can Am Speedway in Lafargeville New York. Plenty of great action took place which thrilled the crowd and representatives from Priority Wellness Campaign.

It was the return of the DIRT Modified Nostalgia Tour at Can Am and plenty of familiar machines were on hand. Tribute cars to legends such as Doug Fuller, Bob McCreadie, Brett Hearn and Ovide Doiron had the crowd watching, but during the 20 lap feature, Aaron Pugh was the star of the show. Pugh grabbed the lead early over Johnny Hill and Ian Gordon. The Kingston Ontario native fought plenty of lapped cars while behind him, Rich Townsend was in a battle for the runner up spot with Hill, while Gordon tried to keep pace from the four spot. Over the final laps Pugh broke free of traffic and would go unchallenged to score his second straight DMNT victory. Rich Townsend crossed in 2nd over Johnny Hill, Ian Gordon and Joe August Jr., who took a Bob McCreadie tribute car to 5th at the finish.

It was a historic night for Lafargeville New York’s Mason Rogers in the 12 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman feature. Rogers grabbed the lead early and was the dominant driver in the early laps with Brianna Murtaugh and last week’s winner Caleb Howard completing the top three early on. With three laps remaining Genavieve Bartlett spun in turn 2 which collected Hayden Howard and last weeks runner up Haily Brownell and the yellow flew. All drivers were ok but the cars suffered heavy damage. On the final restart Rogers managed to stay up front and would pull away from the field for a historic first career win. Rogers, who still competes in go karts, just turned 11 years old, making him the youngest winner in track history. Brianna Murtaugh, Caleb Howard, Eymarah Bowman and Mike Durham rounded out the top 5.

Ken Klinkowsky had a dominant car in last weeks 20 Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car feature only to have the win slip away. This week was much the same as he led the early laps over Tucker Donath and Bruno Richard. Richard had a fast car and was able to get by Donath for second but had over a straight away to make up as the laps clicked off. With 5 to go Klinkowsky still led but traffic and a fast closing Bruno Richard were going to make it tough on the veteran. On lap 18 off turn two Richard closed in and Klinkowsky made one small mistake off the corner, allowing Richard to get by down the back stretch. From there the Gatineau Quebec native would march on to his second win of the year and his 72 career win overall. Klinkowsky settled for second with Tucker Donath, Nick Webb and 3-time defending track champion Josh Verne Jr. 5th.

The 25 lap Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature was next up and Derek Webb was looking to get back to victory lane as he took the lead early from Remington Hamm and looked to be the car to beat in the early laps. The top two drove away while Scott Webb, Ryan Bartlett and Billy Dunn were in a battle for top 5 spots. Dunn was able to take his car past both Webb and Bartlett for 3rd, as he began his charge after the top two drivers. By lap 14 Derek Webb had the lead and was running away, while Dunn continued his charge, taking second from Hamm, as he closed in on Derek Webb for the lead. On lap 18, Dunn used the outside lane again off turn 4 to grab the lead while Hamm found speed late and got by Webb for the runner up spot. Over the final 6 laps Billy Dunn would hit his marks perfectly and despite a fast closing Remington Hamm, it was Billy Dunn’s night as he scored his first win of the year and 67th overall Modified win at Can Am. Hamm finished a career best second with Ryan Bartlett 3rd, points leader Lance Willix 4th with Tim Fuller 5th.

Brady Howard had a great career in Limited Sportsman action winning 7 events over the last few years. Friday night he was the dominant driver at the start of the 20 lap Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman feature, as he pulled away to over a straight away lead over Trevor Gibbons and Camdin Cook. Howard was on cruise control on this night and appeared to be on his way for the win, but some of the top point runners were on the move to the front. Taylor Doxtator made his way to the top 5 from his 13th starting spot, taking 4th from Eric Nier, but had a long way to go to catch the leader. On lap 12 that changed as the yellow flew, setting up a key restart. When the green flew it was Gibbons taking the lead while Doxtator charged to 2nd with Richard Murtaugh coming from the 9th starting spot to third. On lap 15 Doxtator made the move in the Dave Rogers owned ride, to grab the lead, bringing Murtaugh to the runner up spot. Over the final 4 laps Taylor Doxtator would hold off a determined Richard Murtaugh to score his second career Can Am win and first of the season. Murtaugh would score his 4th runner up finish of the year, with Eric Nier 3rd, Gavin Eisele charged from 12th to 4th, while Jessica Power took the 5th spot.

The action packed night was complete with a 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature and 5 cars were all tied up in a battle for the lead and had the crowd on their feet all race long. Tony Frezzo took the lead from Jared Gilson on lap 3 and had a fast car but three-time feature winner Corey Valade was on the move as he charged to second on lap 5 with Mike Greenfield completing the top three. Behind the top three Francis White and Anthony St. Mary Jr, were on the charge as well, leaving many to wonder who had the clear advantage. Mike Greenfield would take the lead briefly on lap 10 but Valade had other ideas and would get the spot back one lap later, before a quick yellow flew bunching up the field for the final restart. When the green flww Valade was in front but Tony Frezzo was right there to challenge, in turn three. On the final lap Frezzo had a look on the bottom, but the night belonged to Corey Valade, as he scored his second in a row and fourth of the season. Frezzo finished 2nd while Francis White came home third with Jared Gilson and Anthony St. Mary Jr. 5th.

Next week Can Am Speedway sits silent but will be back in full force on Wednesday July 2nd for the 29th running of the Pabst Shootout for the Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, which is also part of the DIRTcar 358 Modified Series.
