A plethora of racecars totaling 188 entries graced the grounds of Iowa’s Action Track on Saturday Night. Rain shortened the June 14th program leading to racing action starting off with make-up B mains and A-Features for the Farley’s Tire Smackdown night.
In the Mod Lite feature Ben George was able to pick up the win from the 4th row. He battled with Jaxon Carr and eventually sailed to the victory. George was followed by Carr, Charlie Brown, Bryan Zehm, and Garrett Barber.
Next up were the Elmquist Towing IMCA Sport Mods. Jonathan Logue was piloting the 14j machine for Anita Lee and took the early race lead. Eventually his Logue Fabrication employee Matt Avila raced his way from 11th and took the lead from Logue. Avila checked out on the field to take the Moffitt Ford Checkers and win. Randy Havlik, Cory Pestotnik, Camden Vincent, and Dusty Masolini rounded out the top five finishers.
D&E Outside Services IMCA Modifieds ripped around the speedway in their main event for the Farley Tire Smackdown. Jimmy Gustin got to the lead early from the second row and was able to fend off the rest of the field. This would be Gustin’s first of three main event wins of the night! Greg Elliott, Trevor Fitz, Jake McBirnie, and Izac Mallicoat made up the top five.
Gustin would switch cars in the infield and jump into his IMCA Stock Car for the next feature event. From the 7th starting position, Gustin got to the lead and worked to hold off both Doug Smith and Devin Smith. Laps clipped off as Gustin was able to maintain the lead and win his second Farley’s Smackdown belt of the night. Smith, Smith, Kyle Everts, and Johnathon Logue finished in the top five. Logue would go plus 13 after starting in the 18th spot.
Corey Vanderwilt would pick up the first win of the year after being a bridesmaid multiple times this season in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. Vanderwilt worked around the bottom side of the Speedway as Matt McDonald worked his way up to the second spot. Eric Knutson, Will Smith, and Solomon Bennett finished up the top five.
At the conclusion of the first program we rolled into our Hawkeye Challenge night. After qualifying cars through heat race events for the Hawkeye Challenge, the field was set. Dubbed as the most unique racing event in motorsports, the Hawkeye Challenge is made up of 24 cars from six different classes including the Sprint Cars. After an early red flag, when Sprint Car driver Brett Peterson made contact with modified racer Kaylin Lopez and got upside down, the field got back in line and the race was on. As laps clicked down, Mike Smith in an IMCA Sport Mod made a last lap pass on IMCA Stock Car drivers Johnathon Logue and Doug Smith. Sprint Car Driver Owen Carlson passed three more cars during the last lap to make his way to third.
Mike Smith (Sport Mod) was the overall winner, Jonathan Logue won the stock car portion and finished 2nd. Owen Carlson won the Sprint Car portion and finished third, Eric Knutson won the Hobby Stock portion, Charlie Brown the Mod Lite, and Izac Mallicoat won the modified portion of the event.
The first main event of the evening were the Carquest Mod Lites. Austin Gray would pick up the win from the 10th starting spot. Garrett Barber, Bryan Zehm, Ben George, and Chaz Baca rounded out the top five.
The IMCA Sport Mods saw a repeat winner in Cam Reimers after working his way up from the fifth row. Mike Smith was able to run down the leader and these two battled bumper to bumper for the final three circuits. Reimers was able to hold off Smith for the win and Smith was followed by Avila, Havlik, and Tyler Carey.
The inaugural Sprint Kings Sprint Car series event was next to the speedway. Former Nascar Truck Champion and Cup Rookie of the Year, Brett Moffitt started on the pole and jumped to the early race lead. After a few laps, Tyler Thompson passed Moffitt for the lead. Moffitt changed his line on the speedway and once he jumped to the top of the track, Moffitt picked up an 11 second advantage before crossing the checkers and picking up the win. Jackson Gray got to second, Thompson third, Koddy Hildreth, and Carlson were the top five at the checkered flag.
IMCA Modifieds took to the speedway for their main event. Kaylin Lopez piloting the Zane Devilbiss 18z on the night took the lead from the front row. Lopez and Matthew Meinecke would jockey back and forth for the lead as Corey Sauerman picked off cars through the field to get to the front two. Izac Mallicoat would work his way up into the top four with Jake McBirnie and Joel Rust as the race was hot and heavy from third on back. After Paul Nagle and points leader Jeremy Mills made contact which sent Mills pit-side, this set up a shootout up front with Lopez, Sauerman, and Meinecke racing until the end. McBirnie would finish fourth and Trevor FItz finished fifth.
The Boone Moose Lodge IMCA Stock Cars would see a barn burner of a race. Jeff Mueller would lead the first part of the race clipping off laps on the tires. He was followed by Jay Schmidt and as Schmidt was catching the leader got up on two weeks losing ground on the speedway. Mueller would move up top on the speedway and open the door for Jimmy Gustin who started 12th and surrender the lead. As laps continued to wind down, Gustin was run down by the 82 machine of Jake McBirnie who started 13th. They would trade the lead a couple times in the waning laps but Gustin would hold off McBirnie to pick up his second stock car main of the day and third feature win of the night. Mueller would finish third, Schmidt would be fourth, and Devin Smith fifth.
IMCA Hobby Stocks finished up with our nightcap feature. Eric Knutson picked up yet another win with Joe Doran giving him all he could handle finishing second. Solomon Bennett would finish in the third spot, Kolby Sabin would work his way to fourth out of a B main, and Brett Maasdam in the top five.
