The 29th annual Pabst Shootout was everything it was expected to be and a lot more as the stars of the DIRTcar 358 Modified Series were on hand with close to 40 drivers looking to get their name in the history books, as a winner of a Can Am crown jewel event. Also, the DIRTcar Sportsman Series was on hand with close to 40 cars as well and the Empire Suer Sprints put on a great show with 30 drivers making the trip for the opener of Central New York Speedweek. North Counties Supply ad a packed crowd along with the Joel R. Davis Legacy for Youth Sports organization were all treated to a great evening.

Dillon Paddock was strong in the early laps of the 25 lap Empire Super Sprint A main, leading defending series champion Jordan Poirier and 2014 ESS winner at Can Am Davie Franek. Poirier took the top spot away on lap 4 and appeared to be ready to check out on the field. Dylan Swernik had other plans as he charged his way forward, eventually getting to third before the yellow flew for Alex Therrien, who spun in turns 1 & 2. This restart gave the rest of the field a shot as Swernik used it to his advantage taking the second spot, then ran down Poirier for the lead. Swernik was able to take over the lead on lap 13 and started to drive away. Behind the top 2, Dalton Rombough and Billy VanInwegen were on the charge getting to third and fourth but were running out of time to catch the leader. Over the remaining laps Dylan Swernik was not to be denied as he pulled away to well over a 2.5 second lead to score his first ever Can Am win and first of the 2025 ESS season. Jordan Poirier crossed second over Billy VanInwegen, Davie Franek and Dalton Rombough.

Lance Willix drew the pole for the start of the 29th Pabst Shootout for the DIRTcar 358 Modified Series and led the early laps with Mike Mahaney and Billy Dunn giving chase. Willix had a fast car and pulled away early but Mahaney also was quick and began to close in. Following a quick yellow on lap 8 the green came back out and Mahaney went to work as he battled Willix for the lead. Mahaney would grab the lead from Willix, but Mat Williamson and Felix Roy were also on the move. Both drivers got by Willix and began their own battle for second. Roy would take the position as he charged after Mahaney for the top spot. By the halfway point Mahaney held a big lead over Roy, Williamson, Dunn and Willix, but traffic was coming up quickly. With 20 to go the leaders would close in on the traffic giving Felix Roy and Billy Dunn the chance to close in. Dunn was running the extreme outside lane and would move to second with 15 to go and with the help of traffic, began to get closer to Mahaney’s back bumper. As the laps clicked off Mahaney was able to get through the traffic cleanly, which proved to be the difference in the outcome of the race. Over the final laps Mike Mahaney cleared all the lapped cars and would go unchallenged to grab his first series win of the year and first ever Pabst Shootout. Dunn settled for second with Felix Roy, Mat Williamson and Shaun Shaw the top 5.

Shane Pecore doesn’t get a chance to race at The Nasty Track of the North very much, but when he shows up he is always fast and he proved it on this night, as he led the start of the 30 lap DIRTcar Sportsman North/Central Region Series race, over Mike Fowler and Elliot Gamache. Pecore had a fast car and was pulling away from the field in the opening laps, but Donovan Lussier was on the charge as he made his way to the runner up spot after a spirited battle with Gamache. On lap 11 the yellow flew for Clayton Brewer III who broke his front end in turn 4. This was the restart Donovan Lussier was looking for as he charged after Pecore for the lead when racing resumed. On lap 14 Lussier took the top spot away and appeared to be well on his way to another win in 2025. With 5 laps remaining Lussier had a big lead but the yellow flew setting up one last shot for Pecore and the rest of the field. When the green came back out Donovan Lussier was able to get away from Pecore, Richard Murtaugh and a host of others, as he would go on to score his 2nd career series win and first ever at Can Am. Shane Pecore, Richard Murtaugh, Tyler Corcoran and Taylor Doxtator completed the top 5.

The Can Am Speedway will sit quiet once again for this coming Friday July 4th. However July 11th, it’s back to regular Friday night action with Family Autograph night and regular card of racing in all 5 classes. Racing begins at 7pm.
