Billy Dunn Takes Checkers in Can-Am’s 900th Modified Feature

Billy Dunn Takes Checkers in Can-Am’s 900th Modified Feature

It was a historic night at the Can Am Speedway this past Friday night, especially for the Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds. The 900th Modified feature in track history highlighted the night, with one of greats in track history taking the milestone win.

Tyler Meeks looked to be the driver to beat in the 25 lap Whitesboro Plow Shop DIRTcar 358 Modified feature, with Billy Dunn and Shaun Shaw right there with him early on. Dunn made several attempts to get by but with no such luck, as Meeks stayed in control of the race. Just before the halfway point Billy Dunn started to charge forward as he took the lead from Meeks and began to pull away. Behind him points leader Lance Willix had problems and dropped out of the race, shaking up the points battle. Up in front Dunn remained the leader as Shaun Shaw and Tim Fuller made their way into the top three, but still had work to do to catch the 6-time track champion. Without the help of a caution flag, it made Billy Dunn’s night much easier. He easily won his second feature of the season, 68th of his Can Am career, but more importantly, he will be forever known as the driver who won not only the 800th race, but now the 900th in track history. Shaun Shaw crossed in second over Tim Fuller, Tyler Meeks and Ryan Bartlett. Dunn was also awarded a special plaque, for his historic achievement. The achievement also put Dunn just 5 wins behind Hall of Famer and 10-time Can Am champion Pat O’Brien, atop the tracks all time Modified win list.

Veteran Mike Durham was the early race leader in the 12 lap Donath Motorworx Limited Sportsman and was in complete control in the early going, with Brianna Murtaugh and Genavieve Bartlett on the charge as well. Durham led the opening 5 laps until Jason Rarick spun setting up a key restart of the Bartlett. When the green flew Bartlett got a great start charging from 3rd to the lead and began to pull away. A great battle behind her took place for second as Brianna Murtaugh and Mason Rogers put on a great show for the fans. On this night nobody was catching Genavieve Bartlett as she scored her division leading 4th win of the season and 5th of her Limited Sportsman career. Brianna Murtaugh grabbed another runner up finish over Rogers, Caleb Howard and Mike Durham.

Tony Frezzo and Corey Valade made it clear at the start of the 15 lap Sundance Leisure Thundercar feature that they were going to be the drivers to beat. The top two pulled away early and were dominant as they drove away from third place running David Rasmussen. However the night would end early for Rasmussen as he dropped out with mechanical problems, which caused one of the few cautions to fly during the race. When the green came back out Frezzo and Valade continued their battle for the top spot with Tyler Collette and Anthony St. Mary Jr. battling for 3rd. Over the final laps Tony Frezzo did everything right as he held off a very determined Corey Valade in an intense battle, to secure his second win of 2025. Valade held on for second while Anthony St. Mary Jr. won the battle for third over Tyler Collette, while Collin Bauter rounded out the top 5.

Logan Brown has had a tough start in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman, but on this night he finally found some speed, as he grabbed the lead early and drove away with Frank Sibley and Camdin Cook chasing him from second and third. Brown led the opening 8 laps before Greg Brinklow slowed with a blown motor in turn two ending his night. When the green flew Brown remained in control, but on the move was Richard Murtaugh. The Fulton New York driver charged from 11th and made his way to the top 5 and found himself in a battle for second, which was a good one between Justin Gadbaw, Keegan Nier and Jessica Power. Murtaugh would make his way to third on lap 16 and it appeared like it was going to be another solid night. On lap 17 that changed as Taylor Doxtator slowed with a problem in turn 3, sending him pit side. This restart changed everything when the green flew as Murtaugh went to the high lane getting by Nier for 2nd then ran down and passed Logan Brown for the lead with two laps remaining. After 4 runner up finishes this year, it was second no more as Richard Murtaugh would add Can Am Speedway to his win list in 2025 and pad his points lead in the process. Logan Brown, Keegan Nier, Jessica Power and Gavin Eisele completed the top 5.

It had been nearly two full calendar years since Tiger Chapman won a race in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Cars. On this night Chapman charged to the front taking the lead from Josh Verne Jr. with George Sanford running a strong third. Chapman led the opening 5 laps until points leader Andrew Hennessy had front end issues, which sidelined him for the night. When the green flew Chapman had no problems pulling away once again, while behind him a new second place driver emerged with Tucker Donath taking the spot away from Josh Verne Jr. As the laps clicked off the leader started to enter traffic, which gave Tucker Donath one last shot at the win. On the final lap Chapman struggled to get by a slower car and Donath moved in to try and challenge. Chapman was able to clear traffic and pull away again to record his second career Crate Sprint Car win and first since August of 2023. Donath crossed second over Josh Verne Jr., Nick Webb and Bruno Richard.
