After a historic evening at the Can Am Speedway this past Friday night, which saw 6-time track champion Billy Dunn win the 900th Modified feature in track history, drivers in all 5 divisions are ready to get back at it, but will do it by celebrating a well known holiday a few months earlier.
It’s the annual Christmas in July celebration at Can Am and many drivers are hoping to receive some Christmas cheer as we hit the mid-point of the 2025 racing season.
Last week Billy Dunn scored a big win in the Whitesboro Plowshop DIRTcar 358 Modifieds. Dunn took the lead from early pace setter Tyler Meeks and held off a determined Shaun Shaw to score his second win of the season. The win was not only important for the milestone 900th race held, but the win vaulted Dunn to the points lead after points leader Lance Willix fell out of the race with problems. Dunn leads Willix by 10 with Tim Fuller third in points, just 20 behind.
All we can say is finally as Richard Murtaugh rolled to his first Can Am win in the Bob Johnson Auto Group DIRTcar Sportsman division and extended his points lead in the process. After four second place finishes and several great runs, the Fulton New York driver got the monkey off his back, getting by race leader Logan Brown on a restart with two las to go, to capture the checkered flag in the 20 lap contest.
Tiger Chapman had not won since August of 2023 at Can Am in the Panther Frameworx Crate Sprint Car division. Friday night he jumped out in front of a quality field and was not challenged at all in the 20 lap event. Chapman had to navigate slower traffic over the final two laps but did so with patience, to secure his second ever Crate Sprint Car win at Can Am, over Tucker Donath.
After winning the first three races of the season in Donah Motorworx Limited Sportsman, Genavieve Bartlett had some struggles the last few weeks. Bartlett put all that behind her last Friday, grabbing the lead from Mike Durham on a restart and running away to her division leading 4th win of the year, in the 12 lap event.
Tony Frezzo and Corey Valade were the stars of the show in the Sundance Leisure Thundercars as they ran in the top two all night long in the 15 lap event. Valade tried several times to get by but the 2021 track champion was not phased at all, scoring his second win of the season after an intense battle with Valade, who still leads the points by 46 over Frezzo heading into the weekend.
This week the regular five division card will also be joined by the Eastern Ontario Vintage Stock Car Club. Last season Ian Gordon, a former Karting champion at Can Am, grabbed the win in the 70/80 division, while veteran Greg Hale notched his second straight win in the 50/60 class. Both drivers will be back looking to defend their race wins from a year ago.
